Dorothy Day

She was a mother, a pacifist, a nurse, a suffragist, and a journalist. She never grew tired of denouncing the injustices she witnessed. In her search for a just society, she discovered the Catholic church’s commitment to the poor and the immigrants, and she converted to Catholicism. Rooted in prayer and putting her faith into action, Dorothy Day is remembered by her hospitality, and the Catholic Worker Movement which she co-founded with Peter Maurin. She died in 1980 and her beatification is currently being promoted.

Your turn:

  • How can you commit yourself to the needy and show them hospitality?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, welcoming the stranger and working for justice demands much detachment and sometimes it is very uncomfortable. Teach me, like Dorothy, to see you in those who come to my door, even if it is difficult to recognize you in them. Make the house of my heart wide, with open doors to welcome everyone. Amen.
