Felix Varela

Sometimes they say you must bloom wherever you are planted. That was the case with Félix Varela, a young Cuban man who always wanted to be a priest and always wanted to be with his people. He was a priest, a journalist, a writer, and educator. Exiled in New York for his work in favor of the independence of Cuba, he developed an intense activity writing and opening schools, and always defending the freedom and independence of his country.

Your turn:

  • How do you keep your cultural identity even in the midst of difficulty?

Prayer

Lord, some times I feel bad about my origin. Sometimes I feel that people around us look at us as inferior. Perhaps I have even at some point been ashamed of my own family. Give me the courage you gave Félix Varela to stand for what I believe and I am and to work for my people and my community with all my strength. Amen.
