Our Lady of Angels, patroness of Costa Rica
Our Lady of Angels is a new example of the Christian message of inclusion and non-discrimination and defense of the most vulnerable. In the colonial era, blacks and mestizos were forbidden entrance in the area where white people lived. It was precisely at the limit of that area where a humble mestiza, Juana Pereira, received the gift of the presence of Mary. An image of Our Lady appeared in the same spot for several consecutive days. Each time, Juana would keep the image in a box, only to find that the box was empty every night. She finally went to the priest, who saw the same phenomenon, and understood that Our Lady wanted to be in that place. She wanted to be the queen of all, not just of the white people.
According to legend, the image appeared and disappeared in silence. She talked to one on, and asked for nothing. She did not need to do it. Her message was clear: the Mother of the Lord would extend comfort to everyone in need.
