Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, patroness of Colombia

Maria Ramos was a Spanish woman living in Colombia in the 16th century. Maria was very pious and she had found in a storage room a very damaged painting on which, with difficulty, you could see the image of Our Lady of the Rosary. Maria desired so much to see the image, and she felt sad that the canvas was so badly damaged.

Suddenly, one day of December in 1586, the canvas miraculously recovered its original shine and color in an instant restoration which closed up tears and holes in the fabric and filled it with light and color.

The Virgin is in a position suggesting she is on the move.

For three hundred years, the painting was offered to popular devotion without any shield and, despite the fact that the faithful would touch all kinds of objects to its surface, the delicate cotton did not tear. The painting still keeps traces of the damage, but it is amazing that the figures are blurry by near, but when the person stands back, they appear in full detail.

Your turn:

  • What do you need to see clearly?
  • What kinds of light are you asking from the Lord?

Prayer

Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, you answer the desires of our hearts. Show me the way your Son wants for me. Make me see the brilliance and joy of answering to the call he makes so lovingly. Help me to look at my life with a little distance and objectivity, so that I can see the will of God for me clearly. Amen.
