Our Lady of Divine Providence, patroness of Puerto Rico
The advocation of Our Lady of Divine Providence initiated in Italy in the 18th century. It was a popular devotion, which later spread to Spain where a shrine was built in Catalonia.
A Catalonian was appointed bishop of Puerto Rico and he brought along the devotion. He had to place all his diocese under the protection of Our Lady, since the cathedral was in ruins and the economy was a disaster. The trust and hard work of the bishop gave their fruit and before five years he was able to have a new cathedral built. There the devotion to Our Lady of Providence was spread.
