Oscar Romero

He was born to a middle-class family of El Salvador. He was called to the priesthood early in life. Intelligent and good-hearted, he was appointed bishop of San Salvador, which pleased the wealthy. Oscar, however, was soon aware of the suffering of the poor and started to fight for them. He was assassinated when celebrating Mass at a hospital. He said, “If they kill me, I will rise in the Salvadoran people.”

Your turn:

  • Would you be willing to renounce to your comforts to aid the less fortunate?
  • How far would you go?

Prayer

Lord, sometimes I don’t realize how much I have and how much you have given me. Give me a thankful and sensitive heart to the needs of others. May that sensitivity, like Oscar Romero’s, lead me to action and to take risks for those who are most vulnerable, whom you love so much. This I ask, trusting that you will give me the strength. Amen.
